OOOPS!!! It's your first period.

We got you girl!!. Here is everything you need to know about your first menstruation.

Getting your first period, also called menstruation, can feel exciting, confusing, or even a little scary. But guess what? It’s completely normal and a sign that your body is growing and working just the way it should.

So, what is menstruation?

Menstruation is when blood and tissue come out of the vagina as part of the monthly menstrual cycle. It happens because the body is preparing for a possible pregnancy. If there's no pregnancy, the body releases this extra tissue, and that’s your period.

When does it start?

Most girls get their first period between the ages of 9 and 16. It’s different for everyone, so don’t worry if yours comes earlier or later than your friends.

What do you need?

There are different products you can use to stay clean and comfortable:

  • Sanitary pads
  • Tampons
  • Menstrual cups
  • Period underwear

Find what works best for you. And don’t be afraid to ask a trusted adult for help. Here's a fun and more detailed video on menstrual products to use.

It’s okay to feel...

Confused, proud, nervous, or even annoyed. All those feelings are valid. Just remember: having your period doesn’t make you dirty, weak, or less fun. It makes you human.

Talk about it!

Talking to someone you trust, a parent, older sister, school nurse, or friend can really help. If you are in Ghana, you can also call the Yenkasa Contact centre on 0800202010 or WhatsApp 0245118228 for more infrmation. The more we talk, the less shame there is around something completely natural.

Your first period is a new chapter. Take care of your body, listen to how you feel, and never be ashamed. You've got this! 💪🏽✨
