Know Your Body: The Importance of Breast Self Examination

When it comes to our health, early detection save lives and that’s especially true for breast health. Whether you're a teen or adult, learn how to perform a breast self-examination (BSE).

A breast self-examination is a simple, step-by-step way to check your breasts regularly for any unusual changes. It’s not a replacement for clinical check-ups, but it helps you notice anything new or different early on.

Why Is It Important?
  • Early detection: Spotting a lump or change early increases the chances of successful treatment.
  • Awareness: Knowing what’s normal for your body makes it easier to notice when something isn’t.
  • Empowerment: It’s a great way to take charge of your health.

You can do a breast self-exam once a month, a few days after your period when breasts are less tender.

  1. Look in the mirror: With your arms down, then raised, check for changes in shape, size, or skin (like dimpling or redness).
  2. Feel in the shower: Use your fingertips to press in circles from the outside of your breast toward the nipple. Repeat on both sides.
  3. Feel lying down: With a pillow under one shoulder and that arm raised, use your opposite hand to feel for lumps or thick areas.
What to are you looking for?
  • A new lump or mass
  • Swelling, dimpling, or skin changes
  • Nipple discharge or inversion
  • Persistent pain in one spot

If you notice any of these, don’t panic, do talk to a healthcare provider. If you are in Ghana, call the Yenkasa Contact centre on Toll-free 0800202010 or WhatsApp 0245118228 for more information

Breast examination isn’t just for older adults or females. It’s for everyone with breast tissue regardless of age or gender. By making it a regular habit, you're taking one small but powerful step toward protecting your health.

Your body talks. Be sure you're listening.
